Addiction Therapist and Life Coach Veronica Valli's Recovery Rocks

Addiction therapist, life coach and fellow author Veronica Valli featured a bit of my story on Recovery Rocks this morning. Veronica is one of those rare individuals in the recovery community that has been there, too, and also has the gift to be able to motivate and guide those looking to save their own lives.

An excerpt...

Tell me about something wonderful that happened to you recently that never would have happened if you had been drinking. At 46, I cut down and decorated a fresh Christmas tree for the first time SOBER. Since childhood, we had a fake tree. Kept that tradition for years. Later, I cut a fresh one annually, but I was damn-near flammable myself. A couple of Christmases wasted incarcerated… a couple more Christmases in recovery with a plastic tree… and then there’s this one. It was so fun, so memorable and so alive. (Well, maybe not for the tree.) I want more Christmases like this and will go to any length to get them.

Dad's alcohol use before conception may cause fetal alcohol syndrome

Expectant mothers' alcohol use during pregnancy is a known cause of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). FAS is one of a range of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). FAS children can suffer physical deformities, reduced intellect, stunted growth, nervous system abnormalities, social problems and isolation. A new study published in Animal Cells and Systems suggests the father's drinking also may contribute to FAS.

The Korean study exposed male rodents to varying concentrations of alcohol prior to mating. Some of the fetuses they helped conceive suffered abnormal organ development and/or brain development. The offspring of the “sober” male mice in the study showed no abnormalities.

The study authors concluded that alcohol consumption, not necessarily heavy use or the disease of alcoholism, affects genes in sperm which are responsible for normal fetal development.

The study mice were exposed to alcohol for only seven weeks, then were given no alcohol for a week before mating. None of the female mice had been exposed to alcohol. The number of embryos per mouse was counted and embryo body weights measured. The study’s authors found “severe fetal abnormalities,” including a disorder called exencephaly, where the brain is located outside the skull. The researchers said the incidence of developmental abnormalities by alcohol use was “statistically significant.”

They concluded that paternal alcohol exposure prior to conception causes developmental defects in the next generation. Transgenerational toxicity — a health effect that occurs when a pollutant or toxic substance passes from a parent to a child — caused by paternal alcohol exposure “is possibly mediated through alcohol-induced changes in sperm” at the DNA level.

Until now fathers have not had a causal link to FAS. According to the researchers, this study provides the first definitive evidence that fathers’ drinking habits, pre-conception, can cause significant fetal abnormalities.

As many as 40,000 babies are born with an FASD annually, costing the U.S. up to $6 billion annually in institutional and medical costs. Costs of FAS alone are estimated at between 1 and 5 million dollars per child. (See related examiner.com article) This estimate does not include the cost to society, such as lost productivity or incarceration, nor does it factor in the burden on families and poor quality of life. FAS, the most recognized condition among FASDs, now outranks Down syndrome and autism in prevalence. A child is born with an FASD every 4 1/2 minutes.

Teens using energy drinks three times more likely to use alcohol, other drugs

A new study published in the Feb. 2014 Journal of Addiction Medicine found a strong correlation between the consumption of energy drinks and alcohol or other drug use among teens. The University of Michigan analysis of self-reported data from 8th-12th grade students concluded teens who consumed canned energy drinks or energy shots were three times more likely to smoke cigarettes and marijuana, and consume alcohol and amphetamines.

A follow-up report noted the youngest students had the highest consumption rate of energy drinks and shots compared with the 10th- and 12th-grade students in the study.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also has spoken out against consumption of energy drinks by minors, citing the negative effects of energy drinks on children and underage teens. "Rigorous review and analysis of the literature reveal that caffeine and other stimulant substances contained in energy drinks have no place in the diet of children and adolescents," the AAP stated.
Energy drinks often contain herbal ingredients, including botanical sources of caffeine, that contribute to the overall average of 80 to 140 mg of total caffeine content. The popular Red Bull energy drink, for example, has 80 mg of caffeine in a 10-ounce can.

While the Michigan researchers reported a higher risk of substance use in teens who drank energy drinks, they were cautious to state their findings don't mean the drinks cause substance use disorders – such as the disease of alcoholism – or that energy drinks were a gateway that directly lead to substance abuse. The study concluded, however, that there's a need for better education on the effects of energy drinks and the possibility that combining them with alcohol, trendy in teen drinking, may be a logical progression for thrill-seekers.

According to lead researcher Yvonne M. Terry-McElrath, "Education for parents and prevention efforts among adolescents should include education on the masking effects of caffeine in energy drinks on alcohol- and other substance-related impairments, and recognition that some groups (such as high sensation-seeking youth) may be particularly likely to consume energy drinks and to be substance users."

Lebanon recently issued a nationwide ban on energy drinks containing alcohol because of potentially severe health outcomes from the way energy drinks (stimulants) mask the warning signs of severe alcohol (depressant) poisoning. In 2012, a JAMA report warned of the health risks (see related examiner article), calling the combination not just risky, but "deadly."

Alcohol IS a carcinogen

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) uses Feb. 4 as World Cancer Day to focus on debunking the myths about the world's leading killer. For 2014, the organization emphasizes the fifth point in their World Cancer Declaration: "Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer." One of many myths is that drinking alcohol is safe.

In 1987, the first links between cancer and alcohol were determined. According to advocacy group Drink Wise, today only 36 percent of adults are aware that alcohol is a carcinogen.

Alcohol is implicated in several types of cancer. For example, one out of eight women will have an encounter with breast cancer and alcohol use is the ONLY dietary factor increasing the likelihood of getting breast cancer.

Breast cancer risks increase 10 percent for every 10 grams of alcohol consumed daily. That’s about one drink. Women who consumed even “modest” alcohol (equivalent to 3-6 glasses of wine per week) were linked with a 15 percent increase of developing the disease. Researchers also found that the increased risk of breast cancer for those who drank at least 30 grams of alcohol per day on average (at least two drinks daily) was 51 percent higher compared to women who never drank alcohol.

In addition, when the researchers looked at alcohol consumption levels between the ages 18 to 40 and after the age of 40, they discovered that both were strongly linked with an increased risk of breast cancer. The connection with alcohol consumption still remained even after controlling, reducing or quitting alcohol consumption after the age of 40.

People with the disease of alcoholism and “social” drinkers share the same cancer risk for several other types of cancer. The risk goes up with the quantity of alcohol. In 2012 research published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research identified “significantly” higher risks for cancers of the pharynx, oral cavity and larynx and higher rates for cancers of the esophagus and rectum. “Alcohol’s role as a dietary carcinogen emerged quite clearly,” said the lead researcher. An older study put the numbers at an estimated 75 percent of esophageal cancers in the U.S. are attributable to chronic, excessive alcohol consumption and nearly 50 percent of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx are associated with heavy drinking.

According to Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology, alcohol misuse results in abnormalities in the way the body processes nutrients and may subsequently promote certain types of cancer later in life. Alcoholism also has been associated with suppression of the immune system. Immune suppression makes you more susceptible to various infectious diseases and, theoretically, to cancer. (from Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud)

Even moderate alcohol use may substantially increase the risk of dying from cancer, according to a new study published in Feb. 2012 in the American Journal of Public Health. Alcohol use accounts for about 3.5 percent of all U.S. cancer deaths annually, according to the study. “Most deaths seemed to occur among people who consumed more than three alcoholic drinks a day, but those who consumed 1.5 beverages daily may account for up to one-third of those deaths,” the researchers concluded. Dr. Timothy Naimi, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, said in a Boston University release. "Alcohol is a big preventable cancer risk factor that has been hiding in plain sight."

The study (see related examiner.com article) determined that alcohol-related cancer death took away an average of 18 potential years from a person's life. Naimi said. “When it comes to cancer, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption."

Philip Seymour Hoffman's three lessons for those of us who aren't celebs

Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman died from apparent heroin overdose Feb.2, according to updated reports in the New York Times. Hoffman spoke candidly over the years about past struggles with drug addiction. His passing packs three valuable messages to counter the over-the-top behavior of pop-music teen star Justin Bieber for a generation of abusers of alcohol and other drugs.

1. Addiction is the only disease that convinces you that you don't have it. Regardless of how long the disease is in remission, without vigilance, it will convince a drinker or drug user he “can handle it” of “have just one.” Twelve-step groups refer to it as the “cunning, baffling and powerful” nature of substance use disorders. Control is an illusion.

2. There is treatment, but no cure, for addiction and the disease of alcoholism. Hoffman sought treatment at least two times. In 2006, he said in an interview with CBS-TV's “60 Minutes” that he had given up drugs and alcohol many years earlier, when he was 22. Last year he checked into a rehabilitation program for about 10 days after a reliance on prescription pills resulted in his turning again to heroin.

Hoffman died in a relapse. He had 23 years of continuous sobriety. He was sober longer than Bieber has been alive. Then the addiction and urge to use became more important than anything else in his life. Within a year he was dead.

3. Drugs – and alcohol is a drug – do not discriminate. They can kill, regardless of social status, religion, career, education, bank account, genes, tolerance, gender, size, race, ethnicity or marriage. And it isn't glamorous.

Hoffman died like many drug users. Alone. Discovered by a friend who found his body in the apartment and phoned police. FoxNews.com reports authorities are investigating whether Hoffman received a more potent type of heroin that's being blamed for numerous deaths over the past two weeks, first in the Pittsburgh area and later along the east coast. The substance combines heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients, and is being blamed for dozens of deaths across the country. Average people. Not celebs.

Ego makes a person say, “That can't happen to me.” Hoffman's death is a tragic reminder that “Oh, yes it can.”
