Coming to a park, highway or school near you: Powdered alcohol
The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) approved a new product Palcohol, powdered alcohol, that can be mixed into a drink or sprinkled on food. Just like powdered soft-drink mixes you dump into a bottle of water to make instant lemonade, buyers will now be able to spike up any beverage.
Seven flavors of the product were approved, including margarita and cosmopolitan. The company said the product is a solution to the rising cost of liquid alcohol and could become available later this year.
“What’s worse than going to a concert, sporting event, etc. and having to pay $10, $15, $20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip. Are you kidding me?!” a statement from the company initially read. “Take Palcohol into the venue and enjoy a mixed drink for a fraction of the cost.” The company even suggesting snorting the powder as an alternative use, according to U.K.'s The Independent.
The website later changed its wording and information, according to news service UPI.
“We were caught off guard with the release of some of our labels by the TTB. As a result, people visited this website that we thought was under the radar because we had not made a formal announcement of Palcohol. … Clearly, this site isn’t finished. … More information will be forthcoming," the site said.
California may have seen this day coming as far back as 1978. Thirty-six years ago the state's tax agency wrote in a provision -- Regulation 2557 -- addressing the taxation of powdered liquor. This easily-concealed drug of choice may face several tests when it comes to alcoholism treatment pros, public health and safety bodies and, especially, organizations trying to thwart underage drinking. Also of note: The TTB approval does not mean the powdered drug has cleared the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Binge drinkers more susceptible to staph, other bacterial infection
Loyola University Chicago researchers report that binge alcohol exposure significantly reduced levels of key components of the immune system involved in healing. People who are injured while binge drinking are much slower to heal according to the study, published as an April online "early view" for Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
The new study is providing insights into why alcohol has such a negative effect on wound healing, linking, for the first time, binge alcohol exposure and a reduction in the amount of white blood cells (macrophages) that chew up bacteria and debris. This defect, in part, makes the wound more likely to be infected by bacteria, e.g. Staph infections.
Twenty to 40 percent of hospitalized patients – two admissions every minute – are from alcohol-related injuries or illnesses resulting from the disease of alcoholism. The study by senior author, Katherine A. Radek, and colleagues from Loyola's Alcohol Research Program and the Infectious Disease and Immunology Research Institute finds intoxication increases the risk of infections in the hospital, including surgical site infections.
Patients with surgical-site infections are hospitalized for twice as long, have a higher rate of re-admission and are twice as likely to die as patients who did not binge drink.
Binge alcohol also reduced levels of another key component of the immune system known as cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide, or CRAMP, in the Loyola rodent study. CRAMP is a type of small protein present in the skin which kills bacteria and recruits macrophages and other immune system cells to the wound site.
The report concluded, "Together these effects likely contribute to delayed wound closure and enhanced infection severity observed in intoxicated patients."
Earlier studies also connect alcohol use to slow healing from muscle sprains and other soft-tissue sports injuries (see related Examiner.com article). Also, according to research noted in recovery book, Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud, chronic alcohol use has been tied to compromising the entire immune system, not just infection-fighting around open wounds, for more than two decades. "Immune suppression makes you more susceptible to various infectious diseases, and theoretically to everything from STDs to cancer."

Weight Loss Surgery's unexpected new benefit: Less risky drinking
Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) has been theorized to reduce alcohol tolerance, but a new study from Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates half of high-risk drinkers completed stopped risky drinking behavior, like binges, after WLS. The study appears in the medical journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.
Lead researcher, Christina Wee, noted, “Given the greater clinical attention being paid to caloric intake and substance abuse issues after WLS, we hypothesized that a subset of high-risk drinkers who undergo WLS may actually experience [less] high-risk drinking. This is the first study to show that high-risk drinking may actually improve post weight loss surgery.”
“So much of the existing literature focuses on increased risk”, says researcher George Blackburn. “Even though we expected to see something different with this data, we were still surprised by the findings.”
WLS includes gastric bypass, temporary stomach bands, bariatric surgery and sleeve gastrectomy. About one in six patients reported high-risk drinking before WLS. At one year after surgery, two thirds of gastric bypass patients and nearly half of gastric banding patients reported ceasing high-risk drinking. And at year two “half of gastric bypass and more than half of gastric banding patients reported this improvement,” write the authors.
“It’s possible that previous studies may have missed this positive effect because post-surgery alcohol use wasn’t compared against baseline consumption,” says Wee.
While this decrease in high-risk drinking is important, the study also found that seven percent of WLS patients without high-risk drinking before WLS reported new high-risk drinking at year one and two years following WLS.
The study notes more research is necessary to understand why weight loss surgery seems to help some patients improve alcohol misuse, while it increases misuse in others. Wee adds, “We also need to better understand which patients are at highest risk for alcoholism so that we might better counsel and monitor them.”
Wee thinks understanding the complete picture can better prepare clinicians to counsel their patients who are considering weight loss surgery and follow up with them after surgery. “Often, high-risk drinkers are steered away from weight loss surgery. Knowing that a significant percentage of these patients may actually cease high-risk drinking after weight loss surgery may help us recommend more patients for surgery.”
